Annual Community Christmas Dinner
The Alexander Stewart M.D. Foundation sponsors this event on a yearly basis to provide a holiday meal, and the family continues to ensure this reaches residents in the Shippensburg community free-of-charge with support and generosity.
STEWART FOUNDATION
COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS DINNER
The gathering is hosted and organized by the SCPRA with help from volunteers at Branch Creek Place. The Park & Rec Director works with the Director of Branch Creek Place Senior Center to get a head-count of community members who the event can best serve, with pre-registration preferred but not required. The venue is provided without a fee by the Shippensburg Firefighter Activities Center located at 33 W. Orange Street. Food is provided by Amber’s Country Kitchen of Newville.
The dinner is 40+ years running and has provided as many as 300 meals each year. The intention of the family when this began was to to provide a meal for those who may be alone around the Christmas holiday, and to give them a place to go for a dinner. Families are more than welcome too, and efforts are made to reach elderly and shut-in residents through Meals-On-Wheels. The dinner was started in 1981 in the name of Dr. Alexander Stewart who was a physician in Shippensburg in the 1800’s. In the first five years of the dinner the efforts of the family remained anonymous and the goal is for the tradition to continue on through a collaborative effort of those who care about our community.
