Shippensburg Suburban participates in the Chambersburg Suburban League (CSL), which includes roughly 25 of the local and surrounding communities. The vision of the league is to promote the recreational benefits and emphasize the educational values of baseball and softball, while putting winning and losing in age appropriate perspective. We value the development of fundamental skills, sportsmanship, and the fun of playing. These lead to a lifelong interest in baseball and softball. We look to encourage our youth with positive feedback and helpful coaching. Our Shippensburg teams are ran under the direction of the SCPRA, which is the only Municipal Park & Rec Department in the league organizing teams.

For additional details visit the CSL league website: www.chambersburgsuburban.org

Each community is expected to run their organization following rules and guidelines set forth by the CSL; which handles business with their own executive board and at monthly meeting with representation from each participating community (who vote on rules and/or changes).

However, each community does have their own structure that may result in additional internal conditions of their own on how business is done, and ultimately that setup will vary from community-to-community based on circumstances of need and overall numbers.

The SCPRA believes in building unity within a rec-ball environment and prioritizes the skills and development associated with being involved in team sports that outweigh the outcome of any game. Having fun, creating community-spirit, fostering friendships, and allowing for social development are much more important than winning a game. We are Shippensburg, together — and that means trying to keep our kids in Maroon & Grey, where we have devoted and passionate coaches ready to help them learn and succeed on and off the field.

We try to accommodate every interested child, and find a place on a roster for them whether they are experienced with playing the sport, or new to it and want to give it a try.

Practices and home games are held at Shippensburg Memorial Park fields, however there is travel involved when playing an away game against another community. BUT, THIS IS NOT TRAVEL BALL. It’s our desire to balance teams and have a competitive situation amongst all age divisions — we work with coaches on roster construction once registration ends. We try to limit rosters sizes when applicable to provide the necessary teaching time, so teams are not too big; however, teams generally range from 12 to 15 players. We also think it’s important to allow the children to play at their corresponding age division unless needed otherwise.

The kids in our program play for Shippensburg, and are not tied to any particular coach — so playing for a coach one season does not guaranteed that ‘is your coach’ in any future seasons. In creating a fun atmosphere that’s based on development we see the benefit of playing under someone you are familiar with, but just like with school teachers from year-to-year — learning a different style or approach to the game is equally beneficial and advocates growth.

—> Please Be Aware: To ensure roster spots for age divisions during registration process, children will be required to sign up for their age specific level. For softball players it’s age as of January 1st, 2025 and for baseball players it’s age as of April 30, 2025 to determine playing age. Accommodations to allow a child to play a division up may be considered once registration numbers are completed and the process of forming team rosters begins. The SCPRA ensures the right to provide a spot only at the appropriate age level until roster needs are known — so please do not be presumptive otherwise with the notion your child play at an age division that differs from their age upon completing the final participation transaction.

—> Be advised: If you see a ‘FULL’ designation that prevents you from signing your child up — please use the ‘WAIT LIST’ feature. A division listed as ‘FULL’ likely indicates we do not expect to have the numbers to complete a team, and thus by joining the ‘WAIT LIST’ we can learn of your interest without you having to complete a payment transaction. In the event a team is formed, or more spots become available — you’ll be assisted to complete the process. *Joining the WAIT-LIST does not secure a spot on any team, preference is determined by the order with which players were added.

The 'WAIT LIST' feature does not require payment and ultimately prevents the need for refunds in uncertain situations with roster spots that may not result in a team being formed. *This option does NOT secure a spot

—> Situation Explained: In the event roster sizes come into play with determining the number of players on a team, the roster will be determined by the date in which the player was signed up and paid for. For example, if a team is capped at 14 players, the first 14 players who completed registration will be given a spot. Additional players will be given alternate options and we’ll aid in helping finding a suitable placement for their participation on a nearby team or within our own structure as possible. We want to exhaust all avenues, included expanded rosters or forming additional teams at said division, to keep our kids on a team in Shippensburg. The same assistance occurs when a division has too few players to form a team — we’ll work with you to explore all the options for the child to play somewhere.

—> Playing Up: The CSL itself prefers that a child only play at their specified age division, particularly at the younger levels — and no child is allowed to play below their age level for any reason. When handling a scenario where a player could play up we will evaluate all the factors before making a decision. Typically it will come at a coaches suggestion or a parents request, and while we try our best to accommodate relevant inquiries it’s not guaranteed. The most likely situations where favor would be given involves filling out our own rosters based on need; however, age appropriate child must be given the first opportunity to claim spots. Other consideration would include: advanced skillset, playing at a level for two+ years previously, and a birthdate that is close in proximity to the the cutoff date. Ultimately, this will come down to need based on numbers more than any personal desire — and sign-up date/oldest could come into play when only an isolated selection from options are chosen.

All waivers and specific questions will be forms you fill out online as part of registration process, you will sign them upon completion of enrollment and have access through your RecDesk account. (Be sure to ‘Create Account’ for parent/adult before proceeding, then add a child under the household member option of your profile).

More on how to sign-up (instructions) can be found at: https://shippensburgparkandrec.org/recdesk

* A processing fee of 3% will be charged as a separate transaction on your credit card bill, and will not appear on your final invoice. You will receive e-mail confirmation with invoice as well as have a record of payment on your profile. If you prefer to make a payment with cash/check you will need to come into the office to do so.

REFUND POLICY: Due to transaction and processing fees, and the overall impact of a roster spot being reserved, full refunds are not given should you decide to withdraw your child from participation after signing-up. If you withdraw within one (1) to three (3) days of registration a 75% refund will be issued and if you do so within four (4) to ten (10) days you will be given a 50% refund. After ten (10) days have elapsed there are no refunds given at all; which includes quitting during the season. The exception would be, if the SCPRA is not able to provide a team due to roster spots. Please, be sure your child wants, and is going, to play!
